About STAR Sports

It was formerly called as Prime Sports (1991-1993) and was renamed as STAR Sports in the year 1993. This channel airs different sports like Cricket, Kabadi, Badminton, Hockey, Tennis, F1, e.t.c. But it gives more importance to Cricket. Due to this, this Network was highly criticized by viewers and media moguls for telecasting too much cricket content. So to avoid this, they introduced new channels, each concentrating on a specific sport for the viewers to provide a better experience for them.

STAR Sports 1, 2 and 3, STAR Cricket, STAR Sports HD1 and a few other channels have been launched recently under their network. These channels air different sports to avoid criticism. They feature live matches, highlights of important matches, discussions, player interviews, match analysis, fixtures, e.t.c.

The main reason behind launching different channels is that, it couldn’t ignore Cricket because of it’s hugely popularity and viewership in India. it served as their main source of income. But due to the criticism, the demand and popularity of the channel dropped significantly at one point of time. Now, it has become the biggest rival of TEN Sports

It is now the only channel which syndicates content rights from BCCI. It offers LivePro for live online streaming. However, it is only available on pay-per-package basis for subscribers. For international viewers, It is also available as a premium channel in foreign countries through various cable networks.
